Blades get Wilder's backing

10 August 2018

Chris Wilder is backing his players to bounce back at QPR on Saturday, despite starting the season with consecutive defeats.

Despite being bitterly disappointed with the result at Middlesbrough in midweek, Wilder praised the character of his side in the second-half, having trailed 3-0 after 24 minutes at The Riverside.

He remarked: "There are a couple of doubts, a couple took bangs in what was a physical game, but I was delighted with the way we competed in the second-half and didn't just roll over and go under.

"There were some tackles that were close to the edge, but that shows these players have got that fight in them."

And whilst he ponders changes to his team, the Blades boss believes his side have proved previously they are a dangerous wounded animal.

He added: "I've gave them a roasting after the game at Hull last season and they came roaring back at Reading, then the last game of last season they could have easily turned it and got on the beach with our season over, but they didn't.

"We've got to produce something similar at QPR on Saturday because there is some doubt creeping in from the outside and in tough times you have to remain strong and prove people wrong."

QPR 1-2 Blades - report

11 August 2018

Chris Wilder's Blades picked up a first win of the season, coming from behind to beat QPR in the capital.

Ebere Eze gave Rangers the lead but skipper Billy Sharp levelled before half-time. David McGoldrick was introduced as a second half substitute, immediately won a penalty and then dispatched it to secure the win.

Wilder's starting XI showed four changes for the game at Loftus Road. Sharp, who reclaimed the armband, Duffy, Stearman and Freeman all started. Lundstram and McGoldrick dropped to the bench, Evans has left the club and Baldock was struggling with an ankle problem.

Stearman won a header from the game's corner but neither Sharp or Egan were afforded a sight of goal and QPR's Freeman saw his shot deflected wide as the home side posed a threat. On 20 minutes a half-volley from Fleck was comfortable for goalkeeper Ingram before Rangers had a good spell, with Eze at the heart of the attacks

Henderson saved from Eze low down to his right and then with his legs following a break but it was a case of third time lucky for the Rangers forward on 29 minutes. EZE powered a shot into the bottom corner following a move which Freeman was involved in as the ball was moved from right to left.

Eze shot across goal and wide with another effort and he and his team-mates were left to rue the opportunities when the Blades levelled on 43 minutes. Duffy's pass put Freeman in around the back of the defence and the wing-back's pass allowed SHARP to slot home from inside the six-yard box.

The goal lifted the Blades and moments after the interval there was a great chance to grab the lead. Freeman flicked the ball over the defence but Clarke's effort was turned around a post by Ingram. From the resulting corner, Fleck's shot was deflected wide.

United shaded the second half and the pivotal moment arrived on 64 minutes when scorer Sharp made way for McGoldrick, Wilder's first change. Immediately, the striker looked favourite to win a cross from Stevens but was felled by a combination of Lynch and Bidwell. Referee Duncan pointed to the spot-kick and McGOLDRICK slotted home - possibly his first touch.

The goal forced QPR to throw more caution to the wind but Henderson held another shot from Eze and an unmarked Luongo headed wide. Woodburn was introduced and McGoldrick needed treatment on a couple of occasions after taking a knock.

On 79 minutes Henderson saved from Eze once more and the Blades defence were well-marshaled under pressure from Rangers. The United goalkeeper also parried a Scowen shot as injury-time approached.

McGoldrick finally succumbed to the injury and was replaced by Leonard, who created and had the final chance, driving through the Rangers defence before forcing Ingram into a save. In injury-time, United professionally kept the ball in the opposition's half and the final whistle was met with celebration from the players, technical area and away end.

QPR: Ingram, Bidwell, Freeman, Eze, Scowen, Luongo, Kakay (Washington 88), Lynch, Leistner, Smyth (Osayi-Samuel 45), Sylla (Smith 69).
Unused: Cousins, Lumley, Manning, Baptiste.
