Sheffield United's Under 23s fell to a narrow defeat at home to Crewe Alexandra despite dominating large parts of the game.
It all started in the perfect fashion as the Blades made good on their opening minutes when David Parkhouse tapped home a Reece York cross inside 10 minutes to put United in front.
As the Blades looked to build on their momentum and York himself saw an effort pushed away, Crewe equalised with their first attack as Aaron Lomas turned on the edge of the box and fired low past Jordan Amissah.
As soon as they'd equalised, Crewe took the lead to further frustrate the hosts. A ball through the middle found Lomas who calmly slotted home his second in under five minutes.
United looked to strike back as Jake Young fired wide and Parkhouse headed over, before Femi Seriki's sliding effort at the back post found the goalkeeper.
Callum Gribbin went closer still when his free-kick came back off the post and the pressure continued after the break when substitute Oliver Greaves made an impact, sending in several teasing crosses, one of which fell to Gribbin who saw a powerful effort pushed away.
But for all the pressure, Crewe extended their lead on the counter with 20 minutes to go when Lomas ran through and rounded Amissah to complete his hat-trick.
Less than a minute later though and United halved the deficit. York turned brilliantly on the edge of the box to get away from his man and fired an effort into the roof of the net.
The Blades penned Crewe back for the final 15 minutes and while half chances came and went, the equaliser frustratingly never arrived.
