Sheffield United Under 23s fell to a narrow defeat in the Sheffield derby at Bramall Lane, a late Preslav Borukov strike settling a tie in which the Blades had their chances.
The visitors saw most of the ball in the opening exchanges but never really tested while Michael Verrips, while the hosts struggled gain momentum but created the better chances when they did see the ball.
The Trialist striker up front saw two snapshot efforts go straight at the goalkeeper while the lively Iliman Ndiaye curled wide after cutting in from the left.
Wednesday put on plenty of pressure but it was United who ended the half strongest and if anything the break came at the wrong time for the Blades.
Jake Young fired agonisingly over on the turn after Trialist knocked a cross back across the face of goal, before Trialist himself flicked an effort inches over the bar from Kean Bryan's cross.
Bryan was an ever-present threat driving forward from centre-back, and he went closest after the break when he drove an effort just wide from the edge of the box.
Tashae Andall-Gibbons saw a curling effort deflected just wide minutes later after a mazy run from inside his own half took him to the edge of the Wednesday box, but United just couldn't find the finishing touch, something which would prove costly.
With just over 10 minutes to go and both sides pushing for a winner, Ben Hughes unlocked the United defence and Borukov took a touch, steadied himself and slotted home past Verrips from close range.
The Blades tried desperately to respond and a succession of corners in stoppage time led to chances that weren't converted.
From the first, Bryan saw a powerful header well cleared off the line before Verrips came up for the second set-piece, but it was substitute Stephen Mallon who acrobatically volleyed over with the last action of the game.
