Under 18s 1-3 Ipswich - report

24 August 2019

Sheffield United's Under 18s fell to their second home defeat of the season and are still looking for their first win of the new season after a 3-1 defeat against Ipswich Town.

The encounter hung in the balance for large parts until the visitors took control late on, though there was a hint of controversy about Town's second of the afternoon.

The Blades had the better of the opening 45 minutes but didn't create the chances that justified some of the control they had on the game.

Sam Ackroyd headed Frankie Maguire's free-kick wide early on while Theo Williams was a constant threat down the right but his crosses weren't quite dropping in the right places.

The opening sucker-punch came just before the break when Ipswich took the lead in spectacular fashion.

A corner was headed clear by Ackroyd but an effort was fired back in from well outside the box which nestled in the far corner of Sam Kelly's net.

United hit back instantly though as soon as the game restarted for the second half. Angelo Cappello picking up the ball just outside the box and firing a low effort in at the near post to level up the scores.

The momentum was back with the home side but it was Ipswich who seemed to retake the initiative in tough conditions as the game approached its final 15 minutes.

And within minutes it was 2-1. The linesman appeared to flag for a foul on Nickseon Gomis, but play continued and in a matter of the seconds the ball was in the far corner of the net and United had it all to do again.

But within five minutes it was 3-1 as a back post header left Kelly with little chance of a save and it allowed Ipswich to see the game out comfortably with a two-goal margin.

Blades: S. Kelly, J. Kelly, Brooks, Neal, To. Williams, Gomis, Th. Williams (Stainrod 82), Maguire, Ackroyd, Cappello, Gaxha (Viggars 59).
