QPR 4-3 Under 23s - report

26 August 2019

Sheffield United’s Under 23s came out on the wrong end of a pulsating encounter away at QPR which leaves the team with one win from their opening three games of the season.

The Blades led 1-0 and 3-2 but two quick goals late on from the hosts ensured United go home with nothing despite three goals.

The visitors made the better start and could have led even earlier than they did when Jake Young saw a volley pushed away, but it took just a further 60 seconds for the Blades to take the lead when the trialist skipped past a couple of players and fired into the bottom corner.

But United weren’t able to maintain momentum and it was QPR who enjoyed the better of the first half. Marcus Dewhurst had to be lively on several occasions to stop an equaliser before a fierce effort from outside the box with five minutes until the break levelled the scores.

QPR started the second half like United had started the first and took just three minutes to turn the game on its head. A quick move saw a low ball slid across goal and it was a simple tap-in at the back post to make it 2-1.

But the response from the Blades was excellent and aided by the introduction of Stephen Mallon and Illiman Ndiaye.

It was on the hour mark that the scores were back level. Some good play forced a free-kick on the edge of the box and George Broadbent stepped up to curl home a super effort into the corner.

Ten minutes later the game swung back in United’s favour. Brilliant footwork from Young saw him beat two defenders and fire home an effort low into the bottom corner.

But the Blades were pegged back yet again shortly after. A deflected free-kick left Dewhurst with no chance before a low shot into the far corner with just three minutes to go meant United left Harlington empty-handed.

Blades: Dewhurst, Ferguson, Belehouan, York, Gordon, Broadbent, Sheppeard (Ndiaye 52), Trialist (Mallon 52), Ompreon (Brunt 83), Young, Boyes.
Unused: Amissah, Hall.
