Sheffield United's Under 18s ended their season with a 1-1 draw at home to Sheffield Wednesday, a result which handed our city rivals the northern league title.
Sam Ackroyd's penalty had put the Blades in front but a penalty of Wednesday's own immediately after gave them the point they needed to jump Leeds United.
It was a tentative encounter during the first 45 minutes as the burning heat at the Academy ensured difficult conditions for both sides.
Charles Hagan had an early chance but couldn't beat Marcus Dewhurst and the Blades goalkeeper had little to do before the break as United saw more of the ball in the search for the opener.
It was early in the second half when events started to liven up. United were gifted the chance to go ahead when the referee awarded a penalty for a foul on Harry Boyes as the left wing back broke into the box, and Ackroyd stepped up to send his spot kick low into the bottom corner.
But within minutes the visitors were awarded a penalty of their own. A free-kick into the box wasn't dealt with and a shot from close range appeared to hit a United hand, but the referee initially waved away appeals from the Wednesday players.
A penalty was eventually given and it was Conor Grant who stepped up to send Dewhurst the wrong way to make it 1-1.
Liam Shaw nearly put Wednesday ahead with a low effort from outside the box but it was United who pushed hardest for a winner with the visitors happy to sit back knowing a point was all they needed.
Nickseon Gomis came closest to a winner when his effort from inside the box was deflected over the bar and Wednesday were able to see the game out to get the point they needed.
United's point ensured a fourth place finish in the league, level on points with Nottingham Forest, a solid season overall for the young Blades.
