United's Under 23s got back to winning ways as they cruised to a 3-0 win at Colchester United thanks to goals from Oliver Greaves, Jordan Hallam and Jordan Doherty.
Blades were in control throughout the encounter and were on the front foot from the off as Colchester's Ethan Ross had to be alert to push away Hallam's early free-kick.
Ross was the star of the show for the hosts but he could do nothing when Oliver Greaves, returning to the starting line-up, slotted home Keenan Ferguson's low cross.
But Ross did thwart United just minutes later when Reece York was upended inside the box and Hallam stepped up to the penalty spot with a chance to make it 2-0.
Ross though stood tall to frustrate the Blades, saving Hallam's penalty and going on to stop a powerful Harry Boyes effort as well as a one-on-one from Simeon Oure all before half-time.
Colchester did have one chance to get back into it when Andre Hasanally's effort from range was tipped over by Jordan Amissah - the goalkeeper continuing his form from Saturday's Under 18s encounter.
It was more of the same after the break as John Dungworth's side looked for the second goal that would give them a cushion over their opponents.
Hallam was once again denied by Ross before the striker finally got the better of the goalkeeper with a low, driven effort on the hour mark after some good interplay from United.
Colchester did respond and Amissah once again had to stand tall to deny a one-on-one opportunity before United finally wrapped the game up with 10 minutes to go.
Captain Jordan Doherty strode forward into space and decided to have a pop from distance. Whilst the shot already looked on target, his powerful effort deflected off Harry Boyes and sent Ross completely the wrong way to make it 3-0 to United.
