United's Under 23 team fell to a heavy 6-0 defeat against a very experienced Burnley side which included Anders Lindegaard, Robbie Brady and Ben Gibson.
United though had a youthful side out and lost both George Cantrill and Oliver Greaves to injury inside half an hour on what turned out to be a tough day for the Blades.
Tinashe Chakwana was the star for the hosts, scoring four of the six goals alongside one each for Dan Agyei and substitute Mark Howarth.
It took the hosts just six minutes to take the lead when Josh Benson's ball down the right channel found Chakwana and the striker fired a low effort into the far corner past Dewhurst.
The second goal followed from a set-piece. Dan Agyei got his head to the cross and the ensuing melee, the linesman decided that Chakwana had managed to bundle the ball across the line to double Burnley's lead.
United had their chances too with substitute David Parkhouse firing over after Hallam had been denied but the visitors were regularly second best to their more experienced opponents.
Just three minutes into the second half Burnley put the game to bed and Chakwana completed his hat-trick in emphatic style, once again firing into the corner of the net to make it 3-0.
Lindegaard was called into action as Parkhouse looked for a consolation on a day where United did at least create chances of their own to occasionally bother their hosts.
Agyei himself got on the score sheet when he headed home Brady's pin-point free-kick before Chakwana made it 5-0 after having a goal disallowed just minutes earlier.
Ali Koiki's low cross was smashed home by Chakwana at close range as he grabbed his fourth of the game just seconds before being withdrawn from the action.
The rout was completed in the closing minutes as substitute Howarth rose highest from another corner to head home Burnley's sixth of the day.
