A Blades legend retires

Posted on: Fri 29 Jul 2011

One of the most recognisable faces inside Bramall Lane has retired today (Friday) after 27 years of service.

Mary Coldwell has long been a part of Sheffield United and is known and loved by everyone connected with the Club.

Mary began work with the Blades as a cleaner but she is more widely recognised for her service as one of our laundry operatives where she worked for 15 of those years.

For the past seven years, she has worked on a part time basis as a cleaner but she has also kindly made tea and toast for Blades employees on a daily basis.

Many United employees both past and present tell stories that highlight Mary's kind manner, but also humorous side. These stories range from occasionally donning the famous Captain Blade outfit during it's cleaning and ex Blades players such as Carl Bradshaw jumping out of the laundry basket much to the shock and surprise of Mary!

Managing Director, Dave McCarthy, commented: "Mary has been a big part of Sheffield United Football Club over the past 27 years and I'm sure all supporters will join everyone to Bramall Lane to wish Mary a very happy retirement."
