Burton Albion 1-1 Reserves - match report

Posted on: Thu 15 Apr 2010

Gary Naysmith completed ninety minutes as United's second string earned a deserved point against Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium on Wednesday night.

Liverpool youngster James Ellison gave the Blades an early lead, but his opener was cancelled out midway through the first-half by Rommy Boco. Derek Geary came through just over an hour of the totesport.com league clash, which both sides could have won in the second-half.

The visitors got off to the best possible start taking the lead after just four minutes. Lowton's centre had veteran goalkeeper Poole scrambling across his goal and ELLISON was on hand to apply the finishing touch from close range.

Albion responded well, but found Aksalu in top form. Webster and Walker combined before the latter saw his goal bound effort excellently clawed away by the Estonian. At the other end Webster had to produce a timely interception to deny Roe after Foster had powered away down the left.

In the 23rd minute the home side restored parity, a cross from Turner wasn't cleared properly allowing BOCO to fire the ball home from twelve yards. Ellison was proving a lively threat for United and Poole had to be at his best to deny the young striker moments after the equaliser.

Lowton was booked for a lunge on Webster, before the Brewers wasted a real chance to take the lead before the interval, but Walker mistimed his volley.

The Blades again created the first opening after the restart, but Lowton saw Poole produce an excellent save to his left, with Ellison ready to pounce on any fumble.

Aksalu kept the scores level with a string of fine saves to deny Gilroy, Phillips and Knowles. In what had become a real end-to-end encounter Poole prevented both James and Brown from nicking all three points for United, before Ellison failed to capitalise on a clear sight of goal in the final piece of notable action.

Coach Mark Smith was pleased with his players afterwards and was keen to draw on the positives from an entertaining encounter:

"It was a decent game that ebbed and flowed, played in the right spirit and we maintained a good tempo throughout.

"I thought the pros were excellent in terms of attitude, commitment and desire, whilst from the youngsters Kingsley James produced an accomplished display and Nathaniel Foster was a constant threat."
