Notts County 0-1 Blades - match report

Posted on: Mon 02 Aug 2010

Ched Evans netted his first goal of pre-season to secure United's victory at Notts County on Tuesday night.

The goal, a volley, came late on to defeat Craig Short's side, who beat Cardiff City at the weekend.

The Blades were impressive and the winning margin would have been far greater had it not been for an impressive performance by County goalkeeper, Rob Burch.

Triallist Calve, a defender from French top flight outfit AS Nancy, started, as did Britton, the latter as an attacking midfielder in a 4-5-1 formation. On the Blades bench Quinn appeared for the first time this season, he was joined by Nottingham-born youngster Adams and triallist Gilbert, who had featured in the previous two friendlies. County's bench included two former Unitedites, Harley and Gillespie.

United made the brighter start with Ward prominent. He had already won a corner before coming within a whisker of opening the scoring with less than three minutes on the clock. From a Yeates cross, Ward watched as his looping header came back off a post and dropped into the arms of County goalkeeper, Burch.

Ward delivered the cross from which Ertl headed into an empty net but the effort was ruled out because of Cresswell's challenge with Burch. Skipper Morgan then had two bites of the cherry from a corner but his first shot was saved and his second flew well wide.

County's only effort in the first 25 minutes was a powerful, curling free-kick by Davies, which flew past Simonsen's left post. The Blades hit back with Cresswell just failing to connect with another Ward cross and Yeates shot wide after a patient build-up.

Hughes flashed a header wide for the home side and then curled in a dangerous cross which Lowton had to deal with but the visitors were the better side in the first period. With 38 minutes gone, Montgomery kept the ball in play against the odds and following Ward's pull-back, Cresswell's shot was goalbound until Thompson deflected over.

There was still time for Lowton's header to find the roof of the net and Ward's deft chip to cause Burch a little nervousness before the interval.

The Blades continued with the momentum after the interval. Cresswell headed over from a Yeates cross and Ward failed to find the target after Calve was involved in the build-up. Ward's free-kick on 55 minutes needed saving by Burch, who then held an effort from Cresswell after Britton had robbed Spicer.

Blackwell made no less than eight changes just after the hour and understandably it took a while for the new personnel to gel, although Gilbert latched on to a loose County pass to set up Evans, who was denied by a fine save from Burch.

The overworked Burch was called into action again on 73 minutes, this time to parry away an effort from Chapell, who was played in by fellow substitute Adams, whilst County's first effort of the half was from another Davies free-kick but Thompson failed to connect.

Evans curled a free-kick wide on 77 minutes as United continued to make the majority of the running and he proved to be the difference between the sides close to the end.

James fired over a cross from the right, Roe challenged at the back post and the ball dropped nicely for EVANS to volley home from 12 yards, giving United no less than the performance deserved.

The Blades comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to secure a victory over the League Two champions.
