Millers 0-2 Blades - match report

Posted on: Mon 02 Aug 2010

New signings Johnny Ertl and Daniel Bogdanovic grabbed the goals as the Blades beat local rivals Rotherham on Saturday.

Just 3.5 miles away from Bramall Lane at the Don Valley Stadium, more Blades fans than Millers saw second half goals decide the encounter.

More importantly for Kevin Blackwell, Ertl and Bogdanovic both got 90 minutes under their belts, as did Steve Simonsen, Nyron Nosworthy and Chris Morgan, whilst Leon Britton also enjoyed a return to action.

Nosworthy lined up alongside Morgan in his first game since signing a season-long loan. Simonsen was back in goal and triallist Logan was given another chance to shine, with Vignal and Gilbert on the bench.

Somewhat confusingly, United's Richard Cresswell was on the bench and the home side included Ryan Cresswell - a former Blades apprentice - in their starting line up, along with another ex Lane junior, Law. A third former United Academy graduate, goalkeeper Annerson, was a Millers substitute.

Encouragingly, the Blades won three corners in the opening four minutes but the game's first chance went to the home side. The build up was given a boost by Ellison's handball, which went undetected by the officials, but Taylor was well positioned to block a shot from Marshall.

The early goalmouth action was a false dawn for the fans inside the stadium, although Ertl and Fenton connected with headers from corners at different ends of the pitch.

Logan, Nosworthy and Bogdanovic saw plenty of the ball in the first period and the latter robbed Ryan Cresswell in the penalty area but there was not a recipient of his pass across the face of goal.

As half-time approached, the best chances fell to the home side. From a Law cross, a deflected Ellison header caused problems for Simonsen, who took the pace off the ball but needed Lowton to clear off the line.

Then, moments later, Bradley's pass gave Le Fondre the space for a shot but Simonsen was alert and tipped around the post at the expense of a corner.

Blackwell changed both full-backs at the break, introducing triallists Gilbert and Vignal, and the Blades began the second half well.

Ward's long ranger was straight at the home goalkeeper, whilst, on 54 minutes, Ertl's left-footer from 20 yards was parried by Warrington into the path of Bogdanovic but the striker was ruled offside as he placed the ball into the unguarded net. Ertl also fired two right-footers over the crossbar.

The best the home side could muster was a Ryan Cresswell header, which was well wide, from Law's corner, before the Blades netted their first goal of the season on English soil on 73 minutes. From an advanced position down the left, Vignal supplied an inviting cross and ERTL arrived between defenders and beat Warrington with a powerful header from eight yards.

United's second goal followed just six minutes later and was created and finished by the club's new Maltese international. BOGDANOVIC got the better of Fenton, cutting in from the left, and after winning an undisputed penalty, the striker waited patiently before sending Warrington the wrong way with the spot-kick.

The goal put the seal on the victory and ensured the final ten minutes were incidental, although Bogdanovic curled a free-kick wide late on.
