Kevin Blackwell swooped on transfer deadline day 2009 to sign the coveted midfielder who made his name during eight years with Reading. James signed a loan deal until the end of the season to give the Blades additional options.
After coming through Arsenal's acclaimed youth system, James spent a short spell on loan at Cardiff before commanding a 'substantial six-figure' fee to join Reading, where he was instrumental in their rise to the Premiership and two seasons in the top flight. He was skipper of the Royals and a mainstay of Steve Coppell's rein before being allowed to join United. The loan deal was made permanent in January 2010.
