The hard-working central midfielder was signed by United on an 18-month deal in January 2011 after a successful trial spell.
He made his debut a few days later in an FA Cup tie against Aston Villa but he had to wait until April to make a real impact, marking his league bow with a spectacular long-range strike against former England goalkeeper David James, then playing in goal for Bristol City.
The Irish prospect had spells in England as a teenager but made his name in the League of Ireland. He played for Drogheda United, Shelbourne and St Patrick's Athletic.
