The 2008/09 campaign will be one Derek would like to forget as injuries and operations saw him make just three appearances. A diminutive, tigerish full-back, comfortable on either flank, he gives wingers a tough time and is not capable of giving less than 100 per cent.
In the summer of 2007 he received a long overdue call up to the full Republic of Ireland squad but was forced to pull out of a tour to the United States due to injury. He is another in the select band of players to represent both Sheffield clubs and has also had a short period with Stockport County.
He returned to action in November 2009 in the local derby at Barnsley after more than a year on the sidelines.
