Born and bred in Sheffield, Ryan was delighted to sign for the Blades in the summer of 2009 after he had spent pre-season training with Sheffield Wednesday. The Blades snapped him up following his release from Hull City and he agreed a two-year deal. He spent six seasons, which included three promotions, with the Tigers, but saw his chances to shine in the Premiership limited. A versatile player who is equally at home in midfield or defence, he began his career in the non-league ranks with Alfreton Town before switching to Hull, where he helped the club from the bottom to the top division.
