Difficult decisions

Posted on: Fri 27 Aug 2010

Recent signings Stephen Jordan and Jean Calve are in the Blades' squad for the first time on Saturday but their manager still has some difficult decisions to make in choosing his starting eleven.

And the fledgling manager will draw on personal experience to help soothe the blow when he finally has to leave out players who have hopes of starting:

"Stephen is fit enough to make the squad and has trained this week but isn't match fit yet. I haven't discussed the team yet and there will be some difficult decisions because more players are becoming available.

"But I want those kind of difficult choices and although some will be disappointed, that is part and parcel of being a footballer. They have to get used to that and remain professional about it.

"I know what they will feel like because I was the world's worst in that situation when I was told I wasn't playing - I wouldn't have wanted to be the manager who did that to me!

"It can break your heart having to tell someone they are not starting because you appreciate that they have worked their socks off all week trying to get in the team.

"But in that situation players have to remember that things can change from week to week. We need them because apart from loss of form, injuries and suspensions also come along to give them a chance.

"The way our lads have trained this week, any that are left out will stay in when they get in because they have all shown how much they want to play for us.

"Apart from deciding who to leave out this week they are making my job easy because they are giving me no problems, just as they didn't when I made the move from playing to coaching."
