Much more than a target man

Posted on: Fri 12 Feb 2010

Darius Henderson is poised for a return to the team following a ringing endorsement from his management team.

The muscular striker is still the Club's leading scorer and Sam Ellis insists that criticism that he is a one trick pony and that the team only uses his aerial power is unfounded:

"Yes, one of his strengths is undoubtedly that he is good in the air, but we don't want our players to just whack the ball up to him at every opportunity - we want crosses coming in from wide areas for him to score from.

"What does tend to happen is that the tighter the game gets, or if we are forcing the issue, the greater the temptation there is to hit it upfield and hope he can do something with it.

"If the service to him is right Darius is a damned good player because he can get the ball down and play with both feet. Sometimes the service is not good, either because we are not playing well or if we are stopped from providing good service.

"At Manchester City they were often labelled because of having Niall Quinn up top but, again, he was much more than a target man.

"When Darius got injured we had just got him into form and he was scoring goals. We brought him back against Bolton and kept him in but maybe we did that too early because he was looking tired last week, which is why we rested him at Preston.

"What was encouraging was that the twenty minutes or so he played at Deepdale on Tuesday were probably the best he has played all season."
