Skipper bides time

Posted on: Fri 03 Sep 2010

Chris Morgan expects to be in contention at Pride Park on Saturday week, but admits he will have to fight to get his place back after missing the win over Preston North End through injury.

Morgan damaged his calf in training on the eve of the clash against the Lilywhites and, despite his best efforts to make a quick recovery, the management team used the safety first approach:

"I picked the injury up last Thursday so it didn't really have time to calm down before the weekend and the decision was made that it wasn't worth risking further damage.

"It eased off on Friday and I wanted to give it a go, but the Gaffer and physios knew something still wasn't right and said I could have ended up missing five or six games instead of one.

"At the moment it is purely box rest, then the plan is to leave it over the weekend and test it on Monday with the view to resuming full training."

Looking back at last weekend's success, the skipper reserved special praise for match winner Jean Calve, before insisting the Blades must use the result as a springboard when they return to action following the international break:

"We have Nyron and Kyle, and obviously Johnny Ertl can slot in there, so the Gaffer has options, although it was disappointing for me to miss a game so early in the season."

"Perhaps we found the weak link with me being the odd one out, but seriously it was great to get the win and a clean sheet. The lads did well because it was a big occasion and the crowd got behind the team after giving the Gaffer a warm welcoming before the game.

"It was a professional performance and three deserved points. The Gaffer is still implementing elements within the team and, hopefully, we can kick on from here."
