Coaching only for Gary

Posted on: Wed 05 May 2010

Although Gary Speed last summer extended his contract as a coach with the Blades he does not expect to play again.

However, contrary to press reports, the Welsh International's deal ends in the summer of 2011, and not 2013 as suggested.

Speed's decision to bring down the curtain on an illustrious playing career is no surprise since he hasn't turned out since late November 2008 owing to a persistent back injury.

Although he can still train and run - he recently completed the London Marathon - Speed is unable to compete at a competitive level and has devoted his energies to coaching and being part of Kevin Blackwell's soccer management team.

"I can still take part and play in training - no problem - but I have been out so long that I have lost the sharpness and spring that a player needs at this level.

"Everyone knows that I was always interested in coaching and management and I am thoroughly enjoying things here. The Gaffer and Sam Ellis bring so much experience and knowledge to the table and they keep me very much involved."
