United prospect Sam Wedgbury is delighted to have signed a new deal at Bramall Lane and believes the 2009/10 season will present him with an opportunity to shine.
Along with fellow 20-year-old Matt Lowton, Wedgbury penned a new one-year deal on Monday and will spend half of the new campaign on loan at Ferencvaros - United's Hungarian sister club.
The duo also spent the end of last season on loan at Ferencvaros - helping them to the NB II title and a ticket back to the Hungarian top flight. Wedgbury, who can operate as midfielder or central defender, said: "I think this year is a good opportunity for me.
"I'm going back to Ferencvaros but if I'm doing well enough, hopefully I can come back and put a red and white shirt on - which is my dream.
"The end of last season in Hungary was great - it's a case of so far, so good but I need to improve even more. The likes of Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton have been given a chance here and I hope to get the same."
Wedgbury and Lowton will link up with the Ferencvaros early next month when the Hungarians head Sheffield as part of their pre-season plans. As well as training under the stewardship of Bobby Davison and Craig Short at Shirecliffe, they face Sheffield FC, Lincoln City and Barnsley in friendly games.
"It's good for us that pre-season is here," said Wedgbury. " We've only just finished the season but we will do the pre-season work, play the games and then head back because the Hungarian season starts on 25th July. Of course, there is the game against United and I'm looking forward to doing well in that."
