Nick Montgomery has given boss Danny Wilson a boost ahead of the weekend after completing 90 minutes on his return to action.
Montgomery patrolled midfield as United's second string on Wednesday night and although the Blades lost 2-1 to Walsall at Bramall Lane, and is optimistic of his chances of making Wilson's matchday squad for Saturday's showdown against Charlton Athletic:
"It was good to come back ahead of schedule and I am pleased to show the Gaffer that I am ready. It was a disappointing result, but I got 90 minutes under my belt. Obviously from my point of view I hope I have put myself in the frame for the weekend.
"The last month has been very tough watching matches. I am not a good watcher; I just want to be out there on the pitch. I end up kicking every ball and it's frustrating, but we have been playing very well."
The United stalwart knows the importance of a successful October as the Blades prepare to tackle a host of likely promotion rivals and Monty is confident the players will rise to the challenge:
"Our squad is a strong in midfield, there is a healthy competition for places. We have some great games coming up which we are really looking forward to. It is very tight at the top of the table with a couple points separating a large number of teams.
"We are due to play some big clubs, the likes of Charlton, Preston and Wednesday. We have to keep playing as we have been, try and cut out the odd mistake at the back and put our chances away at the other end."
