Ertl lays down marker

Posted on: Mon 26 Jul 2010

Utility man Johnny Ertl has made a significant impact in United's pre-season fixtures and in doing so has given the management team a problem.

The powerful Austrian, signed from Crystal Palace in the summer, is known for his versatility and has made a strong case for inclusion in the eyes of many fans who have watched him over the last three weeks.

How Kevin Blackwell will use him is just one of an intriguing number of selection posers he must solve as the squad gets stronger with more additions.

"He has already played centre-back with Chris Morgan on a few occasions before doing a midfield job at Rotherham, and he has looked decent," said assistant manager Sam Ellis, adding:

"He will have to adapt to our needs. We are looking at him and hoping to find his most effective position."

Nyron Nosworthy's signing has increased competition at centre-half, whilst the eventual return from injury of Stephen Quinn and Lee Williamson will add strength to midfield, but Ertl's early bid for a place has put him right in the frame as selection for the first league fixture at Cardiff looms I two week's time.
