Del takes a break

Posted on: Tue 25 May 2010

Derek Geary has admitted it has been an emotional few days after learning he would not have his current deal with the Blades extended and he is unsure what the future holds.

The popular full-back has typified United's identity during his time at the Lane, fighting back from several serious injuries along the way, although he has acknowledged that the time is right to make a clean break.

Geary has nothing but praise for the support he has received from the terraces:

"I have been with the club a long time so it is disappointing to be leaving, but with the injuries over the last two years it is probably the right time to move on, although it is still emotional.

"My six years with the Blades have been great after leaving Sheffield Wednesday, but I have just loved every minute of my time in the city, to be honest.

"I need to take a break over the summer and rest the knee. Everyone knows about my problems, but I will assess things and see what my options are.

"I want to carry on but I am also realistic about the situation, too. I am 30 next month so I will see how I feel in a few weeks. If I can carry on I will, if not I won't - it is that simple.

"I knew I would get back playing and it was satisfying to play quite a few matches, although it would have been nice to get a proper chance to say goodbye to the fans in the last couple of matches.

"The main thing is I have no regrets from my twelve years in Sheffield and I will look back at them with plenty of fond memories."
