Kevin Blackwell has revealed that summer signing Lee Williamson could require an operation.

The midfielder, whose only appearance in a United shirt to date was against Floriana on the pre-season tour to Malta, is struggling with a back problem.

After Friday's 0-0 draw at Middlesbrough, boss Blackwell commented: "Lee saw a specialist on Thursday and the full ramifications of his problem will become clear on Monday.

"He has a bulging disc which could force him into an operation - it is disappointing for everyone. I think the problem is similar to what Gary Speed has had."
