The boy done good

Posted on: Wed 19 Nov 2008

Kyle Naughton made his International bow at Bramall Lane on Tuesday, coming on as a substitute on the hour as England U21s beat the Czech Republic 2-0.

And England boss Stuart Pearce - under whose stewardship the squad has completed an undefeated calendar year - expressed his satisfaction that the local Sheffield lad had acquitted himself well:

"He and the other new lads that came on fitted in pretty well and showed no nerves which is always pleasing for a manager. Their introduction didn't disrupt us, in fact they gave us a boost.

"Kyle Naughton has been doing good things for Sheffield United and he looks like a player with a bright future."

Pearce insists that the experience of playing for their country is of mutual benefit to all parties concerned:

"This U21 side is a winning one at the moment, even when a lot of changes have been made. Any player who comes in, gets some time on the pitch and does well at this level goes back to his club with a confidence boost for the next league game."

Scorer of the first goal, Fraizer Campbell - on loan to Spurs from Manchester United this season - talked about the potential of progression from the U21s as real motivation for every young player who turns out for Pearce:

"This is a good squad and for us to see how Michael Mancienne has received a senior call-up this week inspires us to try and do the same."
