Ex Blades' Wembley success

Posted on: Mon 17 May 2010

Former Blades defender Chris Wilder will return to the Football League next season after guiding Oxford United to promotion from the Conference.

At Wembley on Sunday, Wilder - who had two spells with United, accumulating 132 appearances, masterminded a 3-1 victory over York City to book their place in League Two next season.

"To everyone involved with the football club this is reward for a lot of hard work that has gone in," said U's manager Wilder, who is assisted by former Blades goalkeeping legend, Alan Hodgkinson.

Man of the match in the Wembley showpiece was former Blades Academy graduate Adam Chapman, whilst another United youngster, Ben Purkiss, was part of the York team.

After his playing days came to an end, Wilder began his managerial career at Halifax Town in 2002 and almost guided them into the Football League before their financial problems. He also had a spell as assistant manager of Bury before taking over at Oxford in 2008.
