Former United goalkeeper Alan Kelly has called on United fans to show the same sort of backing for the team that he enjoyed at the Lane in the 1990s.
One of Bramall Lane's most popular players in recent times, Kelly - who was in the crowd at Blackpool when United played there last week - reckons that if his counterparts today wear their hearts on their sleeves the Blades fans will always back them:
"We had our share of trials and tribulations when I was here but a great quality of United's crowd is that as long as their team works hard and shows endeavour they will ask no more of them.
"I haven't seen as much of the team as I would like and I am sure they are giving their all, so it is now a case of them continuing to show that they are fighting their way through this tough spell.
"Blades fans love to see that in the red and white shirt and although players will always have bad games - I had my share and you know when you have them - the supporters will forgive them if they can see them giving an honest effort."
The loss of the unbeaten home record against Cardiff was a blow and The Republic of Ireland goalkeeping coach says that confidence building - and a rapport with the crowd - must start at home:
"The fans have a perfect right to express an opinion but it can make life difficult for some players at home so it has to be expressed in the right manner.
"Having lost against Cardiff the team at least has a quick chance to make things right against Newcastle.
"As a team the home games in any season are your staple diet - you have to make the ground your fortress - and then the away form will follow.
"I think in my time many of us had a real feeling of support from our supporters at Bramall Lane whereas, today, the modern way can sometimes be to look for someone to blame.
"Fans have to get away from that mentality and I really want Blades supporters to show the current team the same backing they gave me, whether I was good or bad on an given day."
