Blades launch Fellowship for former players

Posted on: Wed 05 Nov 2008

Sheffield United's oldest surviving star will help officially launch a new Fellowship for former players.

Eighty eight-year-old Colin Collindridge is making a return to Bramall Lane to mark the opening Fellowship event on Friday, 7th November at the club's Legends of the Lane.

Colin was top scorer in United's 1946-47 Division One season and former striker will join other ex-players at the Bramall Lane museum.

The Fellowship has been devised to celebrate all the hundreds of surviving ex-stars who have pulled on the Blades' famous red and white shirt.

A VIP reception for former players will precede the launch of United's Who's Who book in the Platinum Suite later that evening, where a number of ex-stars will be in attendance along with more than 300 invited guests who have pre-ordered the book.

United's Who's Who book will look back on almost 120 years of the club's history, including 1583 players who have appeared in various league, cup and friendly matches for the Blades.

It will cover biographies on players, comments from contemporaries and covers their time after Bramall Lane.

The Fellowship will be run by the Blades and chaired by former player Ted Hemsley, with members receiving regular newsletters about the club and invitations to games and events, including get-togethers with former team mates.

The media are invited to attend the VIP reception and book launch for photographs, filming and interviews with the former players.

Order of events on 7th November:

7pm - Former player Fellowship reception, Legends of the Lane museum, Bramall Lane.
7.30pm - Who's Who book launch, Platinum Suite, Bramall Lane.
9pm - close.

United are currently compiling a database of former players from their records and already contacted hundreds about the scheme.

John Garrett, player liaison officer and Legends of the Lane historian, said: "The aim of the Fellowship is very simple. We want to keep all players and their families who have been associated with the Blades down the years involved in the family that is Sheffield United Football Club.

"It will offer an opportunity for colleagues who may not have actually seen one another for a number of years to meet up, along with those who have remained close to the city after their careers with the Blades has ended.

"If there are any other former players who are keen to get to join the Fellowship then they should contact me at the club for more details."
