Chairman at fans' forum

Posted on: Sat 15 Aug 2009

Kevin McCabe was at Bramall Lane on Friday evening, meeting fans who had packed into the Platinum Suite.

The Blades chairman answered questions from the assembled audience and submitted queries from Unitedites on a varied range of subjects.

Below is a summarised version of the questions and answers given by Mr McCabe...

Where is your football club at now?
KMcC: "This club of ours is still creative, progressive and doing our utmost to succeed. Our objective is to get back to the Premiership and then re-assess."

What is the club's financial state?
KMcC: "We are in good financial health. Banks are not out to fund football clubs anymore. Our debt is nominal. We probably still have the highest player wage bill in the Championship, barring the three clubs coming down, and we need to make it affordable. All of my colleagues at the club are charged with bringing in income to make us successful I will not let the club's debt get out of hand, that would be irresponsible. I'm a supporter like yourselves but I carry the worries."

Can you explain the club's transfer policy?
KMcC: "The simple aim is to try and improve the squad, bringing players of better quality to boost the squad...that's what we have tried to do. Recently, there is not a club at Championship level that has spent more than Sheffield United - no other clubs have done that and it's not the Sheffield United of old. Yes, two of our youngsters have left of late, but look at the squad, and the price it has cost us to put together, other clubs have got nowhere near that."

Can you explain the deal for the Kyles?
KMcC: "From Sheffield United's viewpoint, the amounts we have got them must be records, they were well negotiated deals for the club. The overhaul package is £10m, of which £8m is guaranteed. The rest is on appearances and there is a sell on clause. How do you stop a Premier League club buying your players? If a club comes along and quotes figures that start to make their eyes water it is difficult. With every player you get an agent, it's not always just the club and the player that is involved in a scenario. The moves were initiated by agents - they make money by moving players on."

Now we have this money, what are we going to do with it?
KMcC: "The money is primarily to fund the wage bill and bring players in."

What will the development of the Kop and GAC (South) Stand cost?
KMcC: "It will cost a lot of money, stadium development does. But it gives us facilities to earn more revenue. We believe that extending the Kop is essential if we make it back to the Premiership. The Kop is affordable in the medium to long term because of ticket revenue. When I came on board we had a three-sided stadium, you have to find capital to fund all parts of a football club, which consists of more than the players."

Is there any truth in the rumour that you are planning to sell up?
KMcC: "My heart and soul is in United. I want what all the supporters want and that is to achieve us getting back to the Premiership. I consider myself as Head Steward and have an obligation to take this club forward. I am actively looking for investors but it is difficult in this financial climate."

What motivates you to pump millions of pounds into the club?
KMcC: "When you get older in the life you understand yourself more, I'm a determined so and so and can't take failure. There is a time when you have to find someone to take the baton, you have to pass on what you have learned and that's what will hopefully happen."

Do you agree that we need a goalkeeper?
KMcC: "We have agreed to take a goalkeeper on loan from a Premiership club until the Paddy Kenny situation is resolved."

Are you happy with the style of football played at Bramall Lane?
KMcC: "If we have won, I'm as happy as Larry. If we grind out a result, I'm happier than if we have played well and lost. We loved football 20-30 years ago, we care more now. I just want to win."

After the Carlos Tevez affair would we be welcomed back to the Premiership?
KMcC: "Yes, and I have got a letter to that affect. We are not a club to be pushed around and I don't think we should have been relegated. People thought I was wasting my time fighting the establishment but I've been proved right, although some members of the southern media wouldn't agree."

What is the club doing to better communicate with the fans?
KMcC: "There are occasions when trying to communicate with supporters, who relay messages to supporters' websites and message boards etc, hiccups what you are trying to achieve. That is why at times communication can sometimes seem suspicious. It can prejudice what you are trying to achieve. We are trying to put out communications that makes us better understood, our media team's intention is to communicate in modern forms."

Why didn't you accept Kevin Blackwell's resignation?
KMcC: "Last season we had a great season, but at Wembley my gut was gurgling, like everyone connected to the club. The media spoke to the manager straight after the game, he was emotionally drained and was uttering words that he wouldn't say the following day. You are better served to sleep on it but he hasn't got that opportunity with the media. I spoke to Kevin later in the evening and I got him down to London the following day. After that session, which lasted two hours, I got the man re-motivated. Someone has to motivate the managers - they feel defeats harder than anyone."
