Speed awarded MBE

Posted on: Tue 15 Jun 2010

Sheffield United are delighted that Gary Speed has been awarded an MBE.

The Blades coach has enjoyed an outstanding career at club and International level and held the record for most appearances in the Premier League with 535 until David James overtook him in 2009.

Although born in Deeside Speed began his career with Leeds, winning the league title in 1992, before moving on to represent Everton, Newcastle United, Bolton Wanderers and eventually United.

Kevin Blackwell said: "I remember trying to sign him when I was at Leeds United so it was great to have him here at Bramall Lane.

"It was a privilege to have him in the team and it is a pity that it only lasted a few months because of his back problems but I am so pleased he has been honoured in this way."

One of the most respected players in the last two decades, Gary is Wales' most capped outfield International, scoring seven times in 85 appearances.
