Leon hails fans +freePlayer

Blades fans played a major role in convincing Leon Britton that Bramall Lane was the right place to start a new chapter in his career.

Out of contract at Swansea, where he had played for over seven years, Britton chose to sign a three year deal - with the option of a fourth - with United, despite interest from other clubs.

The 27-year-old was part of the Swansea team that lost here in April and he saw first hand the passion and commitment of Unitedites. "The atmosphere around the ground on that day is still fresh in my mind," said Britton. "And it was one of the factors in me deciding to sign.

"Every time I've been here I've thought that the atmosphere has been special - I can't wait to meet all the lads and get out on the pitch in front of a packed crowd."

He adds: "I have known about United's interest since the end of last season. Since then things have moved on, there has been a lot of contact between my representatives, Kevin Blackwell and Trevor Birch, a lot of talks have gone on.

"It wasn't an easy choice, but it was a big one, having been at Swansea for such a long time. It was hard to leave Swansea but I thought the time had come for a fresh challenge and moving north isn't a problem for me.

"There were options in the Premiership, but I decided this was the right move. I had to make the right decision and I took a lot of time but everything about the club is right for me. The ambition here is a big pull.

"The club is always looking for promotion and that is where I want to be, you look at the players who have re-signed here, Montgomery, Morgan and Cresswell, and that is a big plus for the club."

The diminutive Britton, who was on the books of Arsenal and West Ham as a youngster, chalked up 345 appearances at Swansea and scored for them in their 2007 FA Cup victory over United at Bramall Lane.

Describing himself as a player, he adds: "I can play on the right of midfield but my preferred position is in the centre and that is where I think I play my best football.

"I can sit in front of the back four or play more advanced - I can adapt to whatever the manager needs me to do. I like to get on the ball, pass it around and bring others into the game and, importantly, I am enthusiastic and can't wait to get started."
