Blades to bring Bogdanovic to Lane +freePlayer

Posted on: Thu 03 Jun 2010

A two year deal to bring international striker Daniel Bogdanovic to Sheffield United - as from 1st July - has been confirmed.

The Blades have agreed terms for the signing of the 30-year-old Maltese international whose contract with Barnsley expires this summer. He will complete his move to Bramall Lane by signing his contract and becoming a Blade on 1st July 2010.

United announced the move this morning in the wake of the televised Maltese Football Awards on the island where the player picked up a prestigious award.

There had been considerable interest from other clubs in the Sheffield domiciled Bogdanovic who posted 14 goals to become top scorer in his first full season at Oakwell. and the switch is an easy one because he already lives in Sheffield.

"It's a relief to get the first new player in, following on from the good news about Chris Morgan's extended contract and the re-signing of Nick Montgomery," said manager Kevin Blackwell.

"Daniel made a name for himself in the Championship last season and I hope he goes on to forge a successful career here. His enthusiasm to come here in the first place is a good sign and made a big impression on us.

"He has some attributes that can be important to us and the more variety we have the better because teams can be difficult to break down if they know the opposition doesn't have alternative options.

"Getting the lad in this early gives him every opportunity to meet the lads at the beginning of pre-season training, get to know them and adapt to what we want from him.

"As Barnsley's Player of the Season and a Maltese international of Serbian descent he has a stature about him."

After leaving Malta in 2006 Bogdanovic played in Italy for Cisco Roma and then in Bulgaria with Lokomotiv Sofia before joining Barnsley in January 2009.

On joining United, Bogdanovic said: "I am coming here for footballing reasons. I am not financially driven indeed I had better financial offers from other interested clubs but chose United ahead of those clubs because of their potential and ambition. I am really looking forward with anticipation to the forthcoming season."

Chief Executive Trevor Birch said: "There was competition for his services and some very attractive offers made by other clubs.

"He has proved himself very capable and adaptable, having played across Europe before coming to England. He is tall and athletic with different skills to what we already have and he will give us even more attacking options.

"Throughout our negotiations he left us in no doubt that he considered United a good move for him and he has great confidence in his ability to do well here."

Some of Bogdanovic's first action for United in pre-season will take him back to Malta when the Blades are there between 12th-17th July.
