October 2009
The signing of striker Richard Cresswell was not immediately universally popular due to his links with Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United, but he went some way to winning over the doubters with his first goal for the club.
He grabbed United's leveller in the derby draw with Doncaster Rovers, throwing himself at the ball and the back post to score. He needed treatment for what was to prove to be cracked ribs, thus handing boss Blackwell further injury worries.
Cresswell was ruled out for a period, as were others, such as Montgomery, Ward, Davies and Treacy, although Williamson was called upon for the first time after suffering a back problem days after his summer switch from Watford.
Conceding three goals twice in two away games in the space of three days - at Scunthorpe and Blackpool - were amongst the lowlights of the season as well as the month, whilst there was also another defeat before October was completed.
However, United played their part in an entertaining seven-goal thriller against Cardiff. Darius Henderson scored twice, James Harper netted in injury-time and then Stephen Quinn had a late, late effort dubiously ruled out for offside, which would have made it 4-4.
The disappointing month - both off and on the field - ended with the squad slipping from sixth to 13th in the table.
