September 2009
September's first day saw United bring in James Harper and Jordan Stewart along with a number of departures before the transfer deadline.
Due to an international round of fixtures it was almost a fortnight before they were given the chance to make their debuts and Harper went straight into the team for the short trip to Derby where Matt Kilgallon put pressure on Rob Hulse to score an own goal that helped the Blades up to fifth position.
The disappointment of a 3-2 defeat at Coventry was soon forgotten by an explosive Friday night in which the blue half of the Steel City was blown away inside the first half, despite the Blades having to throw loanee Andrew Davies straight into the mix after signing just hours before kick-off.
The Owls fans at the Bramall Lane end of the ground were in prime position to see Jamie Ward, then Darius Henderson and an own goal from Lewis Buxton give the Blades a 3-0 half-time advantage.
Wednesday fought back after the interval and two goals added nervousness but United held on to secure bragging rights for the next seven months.
Two sendings off, a penalty and a disallowed goal in an incident-packed game followed at Swansea's Liberty Stadium but it was no consolation to Blades fans who witnessed a 2-1 defeat.
The month ended with an exciting game in front of another bumper Lane crowd. Ipswich, chasing their first win of the season, held a 3-1 lead going into the last 15 minutes but late goals from Darius Henderson and Chris Morgan earned a share of the spoils.
