The Blades are still in discussions with Nick Montgomery about his future at Bramall Lane despite the player rejecting a new contract offer.

The 28 year old stalwart's current deal expires in the summer but both parties would ideally see him sign another one if an agreement can be reached.

Kevin Blackwell said: "I hope the situation changes because I love Monty and he's a great lad. He and Sheffield United go together and I honestly don't think that he would be as good playing for anyone else.

"It has taken him a long time to win the fans over, most now appreciate what a valuable player he is and I hope he doesn't throw that away.

"He is a terrific club man, very important to us and we will see what happens."

With so many Blades players out of contract in a few months time United are, in most cases, waiting until the summer before opening negotiations about new deals.
