United dedicate match to Britain's heroes

Posted on: Tue 24 Nov 2009

Sheffield United honoured servicemen and women from the armed forces during Saturday's triumphant match against Peterborough.

The club staged a variety of activities during United's 1-0 win in aid of Help for Heroes, the Football League's charity of the year.

Troops lined up by the tunnel to make a guard of honour welcoming players onto the pitch. The Blades squad wore specially designed match and training kits emblazoned with the Help for Heroes logo which will now be auctioned off on ebay, with the total amount of money raised from the match to be confirmed.

Injured Royal Marine Nicholas Gibbons presented the match ball before kick off and was reunited with his schoolmate and Blades player Kyle Walker. The pair became friends at 14-years-old at High Storrs School, Sheffield.

Nicholas was just one month into his tour of duty in the Helmand Province, Afghanistan, when he triggered an improvised explosive device in November last year.

Singer Stephanie King and winner of Stephanie's Stars of the Future, Tammi Wilcoxson, aged 13, sung Vera Lynn's World Wartime favourite "We Will Meet Again" in front of the dug outs before kick off.

Troops did a lap of honour around the pitch at half-time so spectators could show their appreciation with clap-banners handed to fans before kick off, while photographs of Blades fans in the armed services were displayed on the big screen.

Even though photographs had come from servicemen on duty abroad, they still showed loyalty to their club by wearing United shirts and waving flags.

South Nottinghamshire Cadets, Sheffield NACRO and the Sheffield Territorial Army collected donations outside the stadium and raffle tickets were sold in the executive suites with a signed Help for Heroes home shirt as first prize.

Four members of the 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery presented Sheffield United with a plaque to recognise United's efforts to the Help for Heroes campaign.

Help for Heroes raises money and support for troops who have been injured in service.

Money from Saturday's match has gone to Tom Bulmer's Help for Heroes campaign. Tom is aiming to raise £60,000 to buy and maintain two weightless treadmills for the charity.

Also going into the pot will be money raised at Sheffield United's 120 year celebratory dinner last week with special guest and speaker Jack Charlton. The dinner also celebrated 45 years of Meadowhall Sunday League.
