Boss in running for award

Posted on: Wed 09 Sep 2009

Kevin Blackwell could be handed a pre-match boost at Derby County at the weekend.

The United boss is a contender for the first Manager of the Month award for the new season and the winner will be announced on Sky's Soccer Saturday programme from midday - just before United's 1pm kick-off at Pride Park.

After remaining unbeaten in the Championship throughout a tough August, United's chief is in the running alongside Preston North End's Alan Irvine, West Brom's Roberto Di Matteo and Newcastle caretaker Chris Hughton.

Blackwell's case for the top award is emphasised by draws with recently-relegated Middlesbrough and West Brom, as well as victories over Watford and Reading.

United went into the international break with nine points from the opening five matches, which consists of two wins and three draws.
