Tournament abandoned

Posted on: Sat 18 Jul 2009

United's three team mini-tournament in Hungary was abandoned on Saturday due to adverse weather conditions in Budapest.

Violent thunder and lightening, plus heavy rain struck Budapest halfway through the first game of the tournament between Ferencvaros and Zalaegerszegi, forcing the abandonment.

United were due to play in the second and third games, but the conditions forced hosts Ferencvaros to call a halt to proceedings.

The conditions inside the Florian Albert Stadion on Saturday were in stark contrast to the previous two days that the Blades had been in Hungary, where Chris Morgan and co trained in soaring heat and sunshine.

Kevin Blackwell told sufc.co.uk on Saturday: "We've been to Hungary a few times and that was the worst weather I've seen over here. It went from beautiful sunshine to dark clouds very quickly.

"The thunder and lightening got too dangerous and my understanding is that in this part of the world they don't play in these conditions.

"It is disappointing that we haven't been able to play these games but we will fit in another training session before returning to Sheffield."
