Scotland U19s 2-1 Slovakia U19s - report

Posted on: Thu 28 May 2009

The UEFA European U19 Championship Elite Qualifying Round kicked-off at Bramall Lane on Wednesday evening with Scotland beating their Slovakian counterparts 2-1.

Jamie Ness was the Scots hero smashing home a stunning volley in front of 224 spectators to complete a battling comeback and in the process set up an Auld Enemy European shootout at the Lane on Monday, following England's 2-0 success over Bosnia at The Keepmoat.

England face Slovakia on Friday, whilst Scotland play Bosnia, but it will be Monday's clash that determines who finishes top of the group and subsequently qualifies for the finals in the Ukraine in July.

At the Lane on Wednesday, Slovakia had rarely looked like scoring early on but that all changed in the 28th minute, when they were awarded a penalty. Valenta went down under a challenge from Wilson and Spanish referee Gomez had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Guldan powered home the resulting penalty.

In the second-half Scotland were on top from the restart and deservedly equalised in the 54th minute - ironically from the spot. Griffiths was upended by Rondos and STIRLING edged home his effort from 12 yards despite the best efforts of the goalkeeper.

The Tartan Army that were amongst a crowd were on their feet again in the 69th minute, the Slovakia defence failed to clear a corner and NESS hammered home past the hapless Rondos to complete the turnaround.
