Where it all began

Posted on: Fri 17 Apr 2009

Sheffield United chairman Kevin McCabe joined Blades legend Len Badger and Pete Whitney, head of the official supporters club, at the spot where United was born 120 years ago.

The Blades were formed on 22nd March 1889 at 10 Norfolk Row, in Sheffield city centre, after the committee of Sheffield United cricket club met with officials from the Sheffield Football Association.

A plaque on the wall of the property, which was the office of then club secretary Joseph Wostinholm, marks the historic occasion.

Kevin McCabe said: "It's great to be back at the site where our wonderful club was founded almost 120 years to the day. I wonder whether those who were at that very first meeting were aware of what they had ultimately created, the magnitude of their efforts and what the club would grow into."

The meeting saw members agree for the new club to play at Bramall Lane for the 1889/90 season and an advertisement was placed in the Sheffield morning newspapers asking players to apply to join the team.

To commemorate the special anniversary United have created a special black third kit which will have the names of all the players from the club's history woven onto the shirt.

The shirt is available for free to all season ticket holders who renew their package for the 2009/10 season before 9th April.
