International round-up

Posted on: Tue 23 Sep 2008

United's trio of International clubs had a mixed bag of results in their respective league campaigns over the last day or so.

In Australia, the Central Coast Mariners came away from the Hyundai A-League clash against the table-topping Melbourne Victory at Bluetongue Stadium with a point to show for their efforts, but lamenting a heartbreaking last-gasp strike.

Doubles from Mariners standout, Matt Simon, and Melbourne lynchpin, Archie Thompson, were the highlights of another gripping Australian top-flight showcase at the Mariners' picturesque bayside home, where Victory goalkeeper Michael Theoklitos was also shown a straight red card with a little under an hour played.

Meanwhile. the Chengdu Blades went down to a 2-1 defeat against Changchun Yatai over the weekend, despite a creditable display against the CSL defending Champions.

Jiang Xiaoyu equalised for the Blades, after Yan Song had fired Yatai into the lead early in the second-half, but it was the visitors who snatched a winner through Tianbao late on.

But it was much better news from Hungary where Ferencvaros made it 18 out of 21 points so far this season when they crushed Vác 4-0, courtesy of a brace of penalties from top scorer István Ferenczi and further strikes from Moussa Bamba and Bence Tóth.
