The funeral of soccer legend Derek Dooley who died yesterday (Wed) will be held at the historic Sheffield Cathedral.
Full details will be announced shortly but it has been confirmed that the service will be held at the Cathedral in Church Street at 10.45am on Friday 14th March.
It is expected that scores of representatives from the world of football will attend and pay their respects to a man who widely recognised as a gentleman of the game.
The Bishop of Sheffield, the Rt Rev Jack Nicholls is expected to conduct proceedings which will be followed by a private service and cremation at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium.
Tributes have been pouring in for Derek, the 78-year-old former Sheffield United chairman. Both Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday have opened books of condolence and Derek's widow Sylvia has been overwhelmed with messages of support.
Throughout his dynamic but all too brief career as a prolific goalscorer of immense power with Sheffield Wednesday, and then through a variety of roles including administrator, manager and Chairman with the Blades and the Owls, Derek was one of the most universally popular and distinguished figures in the game.
His extraordinary career saw him respected by supporters of both city clubs, and the award of an MBE in 2006 was an honour he typically regarded as something that Sheffield should share, rather than just himself.
It was achieved after suffering the tragic loss of his leg as a young player, and his wisdom and support was appreciated by a multitude of people within the game.
