United boss Bryan Robson is pleased that competition for the number one jersey is an even battle between Paddy Kenny and Ian Bennett, whilst admitting both 'keepers are similar in many ways.
Robson was delighted with Kenny's performance at Charlton Athletic on Tuesday, but disappointed it came at the expense of Bennett, who is suffering with a badly bruised hand, sustained against Plymouth Argyle at Bramall Lane:
"Paddy played with plenty of confidence and that is probably his best game this season. There is no break for Benno, just heavy bruising so hopefully another week and he should be back in contention. To be fair, Benno he has performed brilliantly this season and made some terrific saves against Plymouth last week."
Speaking about the number one position, the manager refused to be drawn on who would be classified as first choice, insisting it was down to who is performing at the time.
He continued: "I don't class it as a number one and number two situation; whoever is playing well will keep their place, especially if the team are winning. There isn't a lot of difference between them and they both get on well off the pitch."
Robson concluded by highlighting the importance of a goalkeeper playing well and feels it is the starting point to a successful line-up.
He ended: "Paddy was fine, he knew Ian was performing so he had to be realistic about his place in the team. Benno deserved his chance and you need your goalkeeper to perform if you are to achieve anything as a team."
