Blades starlets catch the eye of Pele

Posted on: Wed 14 Nov 2007

Two young United players have caught the eye of Pele.

The Brazilian legend took time out to watch the Sheffield United - Sao Paulo game - the final fixture in the Pele International Challenge U17 tournament also featuring Manchester United and FC Porto.

The game, played before the Sheffield FC's 150th anniversary match against Inter Milan at Bramall Lane, saw the Brazilians win the tournament and Pele presenting the trophy.

However, Pele spotted England youth international Lee Askham, from Killamarsh, and striker Sean Gordon, from Nottingham, as ones for the future.

"I liked what I saw of Askham and Gordon. They are promising," said Pele.

Pele is a follower of the English game where the Premier League and Championship are broadcast in Brazil.

"The Premier League is one of the best to watch in the world. Arsenal are my favourite team right now and I think they are the best performing team in the Premier League, but I also like to watch Manchester United," said the legendary Brazilian.

"My favourite players are Gerrard, Rooney and Ronaldo. I love watching Gerrard and I think Rooney and Ronaldo are top players as well," he added.
