Sao Paulo link is a benefit

Posted on: Thu 08 Nov 2007

Kevin McCabe and Pele are in agreement that the partnership between United and Sao Paulo can only be of benefit to both clubs.

Pele's presence in Sheffield this week has partly been organised due to United's friendship with the Brazilian champions.

"Publicity on both continents can only help cement our relationship with Sao Paulo," said McCabe. "People in Brazil take notice because Pele has become a friend of the Blades. We have worked hard to build up a friendship between the clubs.

"Sao Paulo have a junior academy with 2,300 kids - so many kids can't be accommodated in Brazil but there is talent there. Sao Paulo's under 17s beat Manchester United 4-1 on Wednesday!

"If we can give some of these kids a possible outlet here, it has got to be worth looking into."

Pele added: "The link between Sheffield United and Sao Paulo is an important one. Although I'm from the Santos club, it doesn't have the infrastructure of Sao Paulo, who are acknowledged as having the best in Brazil.

"Sao Paulo also have the best administration and a lot of good players coming through. Sheffield United can learn from Sao Paulo and vice versa."

As part of his visit to Sheffield, Pele was guest of honour at Sheffield FC's 150th anniversary celebration fixture with Inter Milan, staged at Bramall Lane on Thursday evening.
