The Blades have completed the loan-signing of Aston Villa defender Gary Cahill on Wednesday.
Sheffield born Cahill, 21, has represented England at U21 level on four occasions and signs at Bramall Lane for three months with Villa having a call back option after a month.
This season the defender has made two appearances for Martin O'Neill's men, coming on at half-time in the opening game of the season against Liverpool, and playing ninety minutes against Wrexham in the Carling Cup in August.
He made his Villa debut against Wycombe in September 2005, before scoring a wonderful strike in the Midlands derby against Birmingham City in April 2006.
Gary is no stranger to life in the Championship; he had a successful loan spell at Burnley in the 2004/05 season making 27 appearances, scoring 1 goal, when hewas only 19 years old.
He moves to Bramall Lane in the hope of playing first-team football and feels the Blades have what it takes to get promotion at the first time of asking.
Cahill said, "It's a great chance to come here and I am grateful for the opportunity. This is a big club, with a good manager and it's an excellent move for me geographically.
"I am looking forward to playing plenty of games and I am aware of the quality within this squad. United should be up there at the end of the season."
An important factor in the move was the opportunity for Cahill to work with Bryan Robson, someone he holds in high-esteem.
Gary continued, "I spoke to Lee Hendrie before coming here and he was full of praise for Bryan Robson, he is a big name and was an excellent player."
The centre-half is grateful for Martin O'Neill's understanding, which helped him secure the switch to Bramall Lane.
He said, "I played 20 odd games under Martin last year, after coming back from injury. But I have been waiting for a chance this season and the gaffer knew I wanted to play games - this is a good level to play at."
Cahill is eagerly anticipating playing in front of the passionate Lane faithful and he is relishing the chance to prove his worth to the Blades.
He concluded, "The fans are excellent and I can assure them I will be giving 110% to the cause. I have a lot of friends in Sheffield and am hoping to be play my part in achieving some good results."
Villa boss Martin O'Neill feels Cahill's switch to Bramall Lane will benefit both clubs and, more importantly, the player.
O'Neill said, "There has been a lot of interest in Gary but I had to balance his need for football with the needs of the club.
"But I am always keen for players to get action wherever possible."
