An injury-time leveller from Chris Morgan completed a spirited fightback by the Blades in Tuesday's home encounter with Ipswich Town.
United looked to be heading towards a home defeat for the first time this season before Morgan struck to prevent Ipswich registering their first win.
Darius Henderson scored twice but United slipped from 1-0 up to 3-1 down before hitting back late on.
New boy Cresswell, signed on a three-month loan deal from Stoke in time to be involved, was named amongst the substitutes. The knee problem sustained by Treacy at Swansea kept him out and his place was taken by Evans with Quinn moving out to the left flank.
In the left midfield role for the visitors was another Quinn, Stephen's brother Alan, whilst fellow former Blades Martin and Stead were substitutes for the Tractor Boys.
The opening 15 minutes were eventful, beginning with Walker and Taylor having to join forces to sniff out Priskin. United's first serious chance resulted in a goal but the visitors were not happy. An Evans shot looped up off McAuley and Wright failed to gather under pressure from HENDERSON, who waited for the ball to bounce up before heading home. Ipswich's protests, complaining that the goalkeeper was fouled, fell on deaf ears.
The goal, however, sparked Ipswich, who hit back with a period of pressure. Kilgallon needed to clear over his own crossbar with Walters poised to turn in a cross from Peters and then a melee ended with captains Morgan and Walters shaking hands after the latter had gone in late on Bunn.
Morgan was booked soon after for a foul and it looked as though United had weathered the storm when Evans headed down for Quinn, but his half-volley was parried away by Wright.
Ipswich's leveller, though, arrived on 24 minutes. Edwards skipped away from a rash challenge from United's Quinn before delivering a low cross which WALTERS flicked before turning to see the ball creep over the line, via a post.
Priskin was booked for deliberate handball but Ipswich's revival continued and they took the lead on 33 minutes. LEADBITTER picked up a loose ball, was allowed to make tracks through the middle before firing in a low shot from 20 yards, which beat Bunn's left hand and nestled in the corner of the net.
Worse was to follow as before the restart Kilgallon limped out of the action with an ankle injury, picked up moments before - Davies was his replacement - and Taylor was then booked.
A neat Blades attack as half-time approached ended when Henderson going down under a challenge from Rosenior but no penalty was forthcoming, whilst in the second of three minutes of first-half injury-time the visitors could have extended their advantage but Alan Quinn fired over when a fortunate deflection saw the ball drop at his feet.
The start of the second period was low-key with Ipswich working the first opportunity but Priskin's header from Leadbitter's cross was comfortable for Bunn.
Walker was booked for a lunge at Quinn and Evans saw his shot blocked as the Blades struggled to get back in the game. At the other end, Stead was introduced and within a minute he had forced a save from the United goalkeeper.
Wright was called upon twice as United began to force the visitors back. Firstly, he pushed away Quinn's header from Cotterill's cross, although the linesman's flag was raised, and then he was off his line quickly to prevent Evans having a free header from Taylor's cross.
The Ipswich goalkeeper then used his feet to keep out the Blades once more. Walker's cross caused problems and Harper was involved before Quinn's shot was saved by the outstretched number one's leg.
Inevitably, with the Blades pushing forward, gaps appeared at the back and Ipswich took advantage after winning a corner on the right. Leadbitter's outswinger saw McAULEY rise highest to head into the goal, with a bounce deceiving Bunn and his defenders.
Ipswich immediately replaced one former Blade with another with Martin taking the place of Quinn before Cresswell was handed a debut. Harper's shot was straight at Wright after coming through a crowd of bodies but the goalkeeper was finally beaten with 13 minutes to go. Little showed a bit of quality to beat his man before pulling back for HENDERSON to spin towards goal and smash home.
Cresswell's first contribution was to pick up a booking for a foul on Rosenior and with United again pushing forward Bunn needed to save from Martin.
Late on all the pressure was coming from the home side. Two free-kicks and a corner saw Morgan win two headers and Cresswell in the danger area, whilst Quinn had a powerful volley blocked.
Four minutes of injury-time was announced and United won another corner, this time from the left. Little's delivery was spilled by the goalkeeper and MORGAN was waiting at the back post to steer home, admittedly with the aid of a deflection.
After United's celebrations had subsided there was still time for another home chance, Cresswell headed down and Harper's half-volley was just wide but at the final whistle it was the home side who looked the happier.
