David Cotterill kept his nerve to power home a late penalty to earn the Blades a share of the points in Saturday's big Championship fixture.

Czech striker Roman Bednar twice gave West Brom the lead but Welsh wizards Ched Evans and Cotterill found the net for United as both sides maintained their unbeaten start to the campaign.

In an entertaining game, Jamie Ward also had an effort ruled out for offside.

Loanee Treacy recovered from a calf problem to enable Blackwell to name an unchanged team for the encounter, which forced Cotterill, despite his goal at Reading, to be content with a place on the bench.

A moment of applause to remember former Blades chairman John Hassall preceded kick-off and United set off brightly, fashioning a chance in the opening two minutes. Treacy and Henderson linked up and Carson had to be alert to collect the latter's low cross.

The same two connected for United's next move but Henderson, back tracking, could only head Treacy's deep cross into Carson's grasp. For the visitors, the goalkeeper's mammoth kick beat Morgan but loose control from Moore cost the Baggies a chance before the home side were back on the attack. From a Taylor free-kick, Cech and Bednar got in a tangle, allowing Evans to pull back for Kilgallon but his right-foot shot was blocked.

Carson cut out another cross, this time from Treacy, whilst Mulumbu was cautioned for hauling back the United winger. West Brom were conceding too many free-kicks in their own half and from another, Treacy fired over with his right foot.

It was around the half hour mark that Albion finally began to offer an offensive threat. A Thomas shot was deflected, favourably, to Bunn and then Koren curled a free-kick wide. A Morgan clearance hit Bednar, allowing Moore to head over a Cech cross but United forced the visitors back once more with long-range shots from Ward and Taylor. Another shot from range, by Evans on 42 minutes, left Carson rooted and the goalkeeper was happy to see the ball fly just a yard wide of a post.

A minute of additional time was announced and despite being unable to break the deadlock, members of the home side were given a warm round of applause as they headed back down the tunnel.

The same 22 took the pitch for the second period and United were quickly on the attack again. Walker was prominent and Carson was forced to push a Quinn shot around a post following a free-kick.

That was just before the game sparked into life with three goals inside six minutes.
Firstly, the visitors opened the scoring. BEDNAR found himself some space away from United's central defenders and was ideally placed to head home a Cummings cross from the right.

The Baggies fans were still celebrating when United levelled two minutes later. Treacy did well to hold off Koren before spreading the play to Ward, whose cross was bundled home by EVANS, with Henderson following in to make sure the ball crossed the line.

Once again there was little time to digest the goal as another one followed within minutes and United found themselves behind once more. Carson's long clearance saw BEDNAR get the better of Taylor before rifling under Bunn from ten yards, right in front of the Albion fans.

Just five more minutes had elapsed when United thought a second equaliser had been claimed. Henderson's shot was heading well wide but Ward, from an offside position, turned the ball home.

Before the disallowed goal, Koren was yellow carded for diving and Thomas followed him into the book for kicking the ball away. Then, on 67 minutes, Carson saved with his legs from Treacy on the right.

Cotterill was thrown on and his first contribution was to draw a foul and booking from Mattock but West Brom, despite slowing the play down, were still a threat and Olsson, possibly offside, skied over when Cech's free-kick found the back post.

Reid was thrown on to add pace to United's hopes of claiming an equaliser and he was involved, indirectly, as United levelled late on.

From a Ward cross, Reid and Henderson got in each other's way but the result was Martis fouling the big striker in the chase for the loose ball. Referee Crossley, who had booked Henderson for persistent fouling moments earlier, pointed to the spot. With COTTERILL on the pitch, he took responsibility and fired home to Carson's left.

The Blades fans were delighted with the leveller and inspired by the announcement soon after that five additional minutes would be played. Blackwell threw on Howard for Ward but the final chance was a West Brom free-kick which Olsson headed over.
