Darius Henderson and Kyle Naughton netted their first United goals as Kevin Blackwell's side left it late to book a third round place in the Carling Cup.
The Blades gave a poor performance at Huddersfield and were deservedly a goal down as the game reached the final ten minutes.
However, two goals inside a minute, the first from new striker Henderson and the second from homegrown youngster Naughton, secured the second round win against the League One side.
Blackwell made seven changes but still maintained a strong side for the tie in west Yorkshire. Skipper Morgan was brought back, Carney made his first appearance of the season and Stead was given a start against his hometown and former club. The Terriers included a number of ex Blades. Lucketti, Cadamarteri and Beckett all started, whilst Unsworth was amongst the seven substitutes allowed in the competition.
Before kick-off striker Beattie was given a work-out on the pitch in front of the Blades fans who had made the trip. The travelling contingent certainly numbered more than 2,000.
Within seconds it became apparent that Sun had switched to a left-back position to accommodate Geary. The Chinese international's first contribution was to commit a foul on Cadamarteri but Roberts curled into the arms of Bennett.
The Blades goalkeeper was called upon to make an important save on five minutes with the same two Huddersfield players involved. Cadamarteri swung in a cross and Roberts won the header but bizarrely United were awarded a goal-kick.
Stead and Cotterill whipped in crosses for the Blades but the home side looked the more dangerous in the opening 15 minutes. A Williams free-kick was deflected wide and after Lucketti swept in a second-phase ball, an unmarked Clarke headed wide of the target.
Flynn attempted a left-foot volley which failed to trouble Bennett, whilst United's first chance arrived in the 27th minute but Carney fired just wide after Tonge's pass through the midfield.
With the first effort after the half hour mark, though, Huddersfield grabbed the lead. Sun was penalised for another foul on Cadamarteri on the right and after a quick Roberts lay off, FLYNN was afforded the space to fire a long-ranger across Bennett, with the aid of a slight deflection, into the net.
Cadamarteri also tried his luck, whilst United came back into the game late on in the half. Stead's shot was deflected by Lucketti for Glennon to parry away, whilst Carney's neat footwork almost brought him a shooting chance. However, the last action of the half was Tonge wasting a free-kick in a decent position in injury-time
Webber was introduced for the second half, replacing Stead, and Cotterill and Carney attempted to make chances early on. With 48 minutes gone, however, United came close to falling further behind. Cotterill's mis-placed pass gave the hosts an opening but Bennett touched away a Roberts effort from an acute angle.
From a Parker cross, Flynn jumped in front of Beckett and headed wide, whilst a Clarke shot was well over Bennett's crossbar as Huddersfield continued to pour forward.
Clarke went close yet again, on 68 minutes, when he headed wide Parker's cross after an initial corner had been partially cleared, whilst in an attempt to freshen up United's performance, Naughton was introduced on to the right of midfield with Cotterill switching wings to replace Carney.
Parker fired a 25-yard shot directly at Bennett, whilst Kilgallon set off on an enterprising run down the left and found himself in space but the subsequent cross was miscued.
With ten minutes to go, Blackwell threw on Sharp and went with three across the back but even the boss could not have predicted the impact it would have had. Just a minute later Sharp went close from Cotterill's free-kick but Holdsworth belted clear when Glennon was unable to gather.
No matter, the Blades were level on 82 minutes. Sun had switched to the right and his delivery down the channel was helped on by Webber and HENDERSON, in space, netted his first United goal, despite the goalkeeper getting fingers to the shot.
Blades fans couldn't believe their luck after the previous 80 minutes of action and were still celebrating when a second goal quickly followed. Kilgallon deserves a lot of the credit, he ploughed through three challenges and intelligently laid off to NAUGHTON, who watched starry-eyed as his shot deflected off Williams and away from Glennon, nestling into the corner of the net.
Terriers boss Ternent threw on two strikers to attempt to rescue the game, whilst goalkeeper Glennon joined the attack for an injury-time free-kick and corner but the Blades held on to their smash-and-grab victory, although Morgan had to deflect away a Roberts effort.
